Here's multinational vendors which ship PCs and laptops with GNU/Linux in general and Trisquel in particular either preinstalled or by order. You should verify every copy of image file you downloaded with their original identity issued by the developers called checksum so that you are sure it is ready and safe to use and not corrupted or tampered by somebody else. Trisquel Project encourages everyone to download this way instead of direct links above. /pub/trisquel-iso/ĭownloading via BitTorrent way is much more faster for you and also benefits community. But if you do, and you’re looking for something to install on your Libreboot-running, deblobbed Thinkpad daubed in FSF stickers, then this will surely float your boat.An old computer is every PC or laptop produced before 2010 with less than 4GB memory and usually still using BIOS Legacy technology rather than UEFI. If you don’t have strong views on free software, and would rather have working Wi-Fi and other modern conveniences, then there’s little reason to check out Trisquel. More often than not, the Ubuntu documentation will cover most things that you might find yourself looking up. Trisquel has an avid user community, and you’ll find help if you need it on the forum.ĭocumentation is a little sparse, but there’s a hardware wiki and well thought-out (but sometimes incomplete) guides for common tasks. Graphical package management is available via the old school but still quite cool Synaptic. The Snap daemon isn’t included and neither is Ubuntu’s software centre (it’s a gateway to proprietary software). Overall it’s a slim package selection, which probably suits the target audience. Plus there’s the Seahorse utility for managing passwords and keys. It’s hard to find a good RSS feed reader application these days so we were pleased to find the venerable Liferea included too. ![]() And if you want to do social media in a way the FSF approves of, there’s a client for the Jami decentralised social network. There’s the Electrum Bitcoin wallet so you can manage your cryptocurrency nest egg. Abrowser (the unimaginatively titled Firefox spin) is the default browser. A smattering of freedom-respect applications are installed. Installation was smooth and offered the encrypted install as well as LVM options. Don’t get too comfortable, though: when Trisquel 10 (which will be based on Ubuntu 20.10) is released, there’ll be no upgrade path for 32-bit users. One benefit of being based on the older Ubuntu release is that 32-bit editions are available, a rare thing these days. This penguin has been deblobbed, we’re told the process is entirely painless. ![]()
